چکیده
This is an annual lecture given in the University of Bristol 0,1 some subject connected with one of the Water sports, caving or mountaineering. It is in memory ?f Paul Esser, a medical student who lost his life while cave diving in Porth yr Ogof in February of 1971, and who was particularly interested in those sports. The lecturer is chosen by a panel of representatives from the student societies in the University that are interested in these sports, together with the Cave Diving Group and the University Department of Physical Education. This year's Lecture was given on 14th February 1973 on the subject of

Interfacial Kinetic Engineering: How Far Have We Come Since Kingery’s Inaugural Sosman Address?
The manipulation of the rate of atomic transport along and across interfaces (most notably grain boundaries) remains a central theme in the control of the microstructure and properties of inorganic materials. This is known as the field of interfacial kinetic engineering (IKE). In his opening Sosman Memorial lecture in 1973, Professor Kingery proposed a set of plausible concepts that he consider...
متن کاملMountant control on glass.
Some microscope slide mountants exhibit a tendency to spread beyond the periphery of their cover slips, flowing over the edge and under the slide, fouling the stationary and moving components of the mechanical stage. In the authors' experience, mountants that are most commonly associated with this problem are alcohol, lactophenol, water and other water-soluble preparations of low viscosity. The...
متن کاملTemperature effects on radial propagation of water potential in cotton stem bark.
Low temperature affects the lateral movement of water across the xylem-phloem boundary in intact cotton stems. There is a reduction in the effective diffusion coefficient relating free energy flux to water potential gradients with an associated increase in resistance to water flow. Detached phloem and excised leaves do not show this effect of low temperature. Experiments on stem section halves ...
متن کاملPresence of thermophilic bacteria in laundry and domestic hot-water heaters.
Thermophilic bacteria resembling Thermus aquaticus were isolated from hot water taken from domestic and commercial hot-water tanks. Cold water from the same locations never yielded thermophilic bacteria, suggesting that the bacteria were growing in the tanks. In contrast to the T. aquaticus isolates from hot springs, the present isolates were rarely pigmented. In general, the hotter sources mor...
